Pulmonary Fibrosis

Before we get started, it might be helpful to recap some of the terms you may have heard from your doctor or that you’ve seen in your own research.

  • “Pulmonary” means lung; “fibrosis” means scarring. The scarring on the lungs is the end result of many different conditions that can cause scar tissue to build up. So, “pulmonary fibrosis” = lung scarring

  • Pulmonary fibrosis occurs in many types of diseases that fall into an even larger group of diseases called interstitial lung diseases (ILDs).

  • ILDs happen in the interstitium; that is, the lace-like network of tissue that supports the air sacs.

  • There are hundreds of different types of ILDs; some of them feature scar tissue, while others feature inflammation or a combination of both.
